Filled with real-life examples and scriptural references. The thesis: divorce is right when the marriage covenant keeps one partner from their life's calling. This book has something to say to everyone. Dr. Sofia addresses divorce from a biblical perspective without the legalistic, even chauvinistic attitude many Christian writers project. His compassion for those presently going through divorce, as well as those who have experienced divorce, is evident on every page. Never does he use a condemnatory tone; rather he examples the grace and love of Christ. You will find this book very readable with examples from his many years of ministry and counseling setting up each chapter. While always underscoring the fact that God hates divorce and never endorsing it in a cavalier manner, he makes a strong case for instances when divorce is the right decision. Just as important, his high regard for marriage comes through equally strong throughout the book. I highly recommend it.
Divorce. It happens. Right off I want to recommend a great book. It's called "When Divorce is Right" and it happens to be written by Joseph Bruce Sofia the Pastor of our church in NJ. This is a good book if you are planning to be married, considering divorce or suffering through or recovering from divorce. The Bible says that if your spouse commits adultery you can divorce. However, couples do recover from this betrayal and the marriage doesn't have to end. I know three couples who survived this. But there are other reasons for divorce that are Biblical and this book goes into those as well. If you decide to get this book I would like to ask one question. Have you gotten right with God? If not and you'd like to, read Chapter 9 first, it will only add to the book. The book is available in all formats including e-book, also, reasonably priced. This book is part of a series called "Hijacked Life" and there is another excellent book about Suicide that provides hope and comfort.
While engrossed in this book , I often had to explain to onlookers why I was actually reading such a title if my marriage wasnt in jeopardy. Hence this review. I am always looking for nuggets of Gods truth to help me before I get to speed bumps or detours in my marriage. "When Divorce is Right" is the perfect guidebook for everyone who is in any kind of committed relationship. It prepares those considering this covenant; it addresses challenges while offering strategies to respond; and it offers hope and healing for the wounded. But most of all, it helps you to understand God's heart on the matter of divorce. Not many books out there that can say that,
Pastor Bruce's biblical based insight is very practical to enure loving longevity; but clearly defines three circumstances when it may be best to end the marriage. I enjoyed all the real relationship stories he shared ; with just a flare drama.The reality of lifes curve balls plague even the best of relationships. This book will shine the light of God's perpspective as you navigate your way to a decision.
LOVED this book! Long before I was saved, I was divorced and a mess. When I decided to get married again and called different churches, the answer I got was "We don't marry sinners". This book examines the issue of divorce through Dr. Sofia's experiences in the Pastorate and with the heart of God. Christians can have guilt and judgement heaped on them because of this issue. I believe Dr. Sofia's book will give people hope that God hasn't condemned them, but instead wants to heal people. This book dares to examine such a sensitive subject in a loving way. Good morning Pastor, just about finished with the book. I must say, one of the best and powerful reality books that I've ever read. It touched on so many areas of my very own personal life experiences both as a child and adult. It even opened up some deep wounds that I didn't think we're there . The two decisions that loom over me are victim or Victor . I have in the past and will continue to choose Victor. I've seen too many lives robbed of their joy and destroyed by choosing the way of the victim road . I'm so thankful that I serve a living God who is merciful and full of Grace. There is no love as powerful as the love of God.
This is not only a good read--it's a must-read. The author treats a subject that is so complicated, particularly for those of Christian faith, yet simplifies his pastoral guidance so that anyone can follow it. Without compromising the sanctity of marriage or its terms, Pastor Sofia lovingly and gently counsels the reader through the pain and confusion surrounding a marriage that violates the purpose for which marriage was instituted. Divorce is a reality, inside and outside of the church, and, in some cases, it is both inevitable and necessary. Pastor Sofia helps the reader to sort all of this out, make sense of what feels senseless, and to find biblically justifiable relief from so much of the inner turmoil, guilt, shame, and regret that divorce often leaves in its wake. Bravo Bruce Sofia for giving the church a gift it so badly needs!
